CHAPTER 15

“Whoa, Mike. What all do you have?” Kelly asked as Mike walked in the house with two overflowing grocery bags.

“You do remember that this is my night to cook, don’t you?”

“Yes, and I noticed that you must have come home from the station earlier and made some ice cream. I saw it in the freezer.”

“I decided to make a piece de resistance for a dessert for you tonight. I know you’re going to laugh, but I saw it on Instagram.”

“I’m not going to laugh, but I am going to ask you why you were looking at Instagram in the first place. I didn’t even know you’d heard of it.”

“Oh, Kelly, you must think I am such an old-fashioned old man.”

“Nope. Neither one, but you didn’t answer my question, and what are we having for dinner?”

“We are having patty melts, corn on the cob, beans, and the surprise,” he said as he put the groceries away. “As for Instagram, one of my deputy sheriffs at work was looking at it one day, and I asked her about it. She told me she’s a foodie, and she gets notifications about certain kinds of foods.

“I asked her how that works, and she said you sign up for categories. Well, given our new arrangement for fixing dinners, figured I needed to up my game plan.

“Let me guess,” Kelly said. “You decided to sign up for Instagram. Out of curiosity, what categories did you choose?”

“Main meals, desserts, and things of interest. Thought it would help me plan the meals I’m going to make. I can always figure out the sides, like a vegetable or salads, but the main course thing can get tricky. Anyway, you’ll see what I’m talking about when we have dessert. Now I need to change clothes, back in a minute.”

Kelly laughed as she looked down the hall where Mike had gone. Rebel, Lady, and Skyy, had followed, knowing that when he returned, they’d be getting their evening treat.

“Okay, we’re back. Here you go, guys,” he said to the dogs as he gave each of them a treat from the dog cookie jar. “Kelly, why don’t you have a seat and tell me about your day, while I prepare tonight’s dinner fit for a gourmand, if I do say so myself.”

“Sounds good. I will,” she said, privately thinking, I hope agreeing to do this splitting the dinner thing was a good decision. Looks like he’s really getting carried away with it. Oh well, keeps him off the streets and out of the bars, as if those have ever been a problem.

She decided not to make him think or have to answer any questions while he was deep into his chef role, so she said, “While you’re cooking dinner, I’ll tell you about my day.”

“Please do.”

As Mike was assembling his ingredients and getting everything ready for dinner, Kelly told him about her long conversation with Claire Duncan. When she was finished, Mike said, “Wow. Sounds like it lasted for a couple of hours.
